What is an Infertility Procedure?
An infertility procedure is a treatment designed to help you get pregnant. For women, fertility treatment procedures can include surgical treatments like laparoscopy and hysteroscopy that are performed in the outpatient setting as well as in-vitro fertilization (IVF) which is typically done on an inpatient basis. Surgical infertility treatments for women can also include removing uterine fibroids, endometriosis or other structures that may interfere with fertility.난임시술
For men, surgery can include urethroplasty or vasectomy which can be performed with minimally invasive techniques that do not require hospitalization. Sperm retrieval can be done with a variety of tools including microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA), percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration or testicular sperm aspiration, all of which are performed in the outpatient setting. A surgical infertility procedure for men can also involve removing varicoceles, which are enlarged veins in the scrotum that can cause a blockage of the fallopian tubes and hinder fertility.
IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a more complex fertility treatment process that involves combining sperm and eggs in a lab to create embryos. The fertilized eggs are then replaced back into the woman’s uterus through different types of IVF procedures. This type of infertility treatment can be used to treat many issues including low sperm count, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), irregular periods, poor egg quality and age-related infertility.
During IVF, you will take medication in the form of shots or injections to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs in a cycle. During your IVF procedure, our fertility experts will then use a technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI to inject sperm into each of the mature eggs that have been retrieved from your ovaries. On average, about 70% of the mature eggs will fertilize. The remaining immature eggs will not have fertilization and can be saved for future attempts to conceive or frozen for later use.
Some causes of infertility are structural and can be corrected through surgery, often with minimally invasive procedures that do not require hospitalization. In some cases, a hysteroscopy can be used to diagnose and treat endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroid tumors or other structures that impact fertility. Hysteroscopy is an incision-free procedure during which a lighted device called a hysterscope is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. A hysteroscope allows physicians to remove fibroid tumors, scar tissue and reanastamoses, which are surgically sealed fallopian tubes, from the pelvic cavity.
For women, a procedure called myomectomy can be performed to remove uterine fibroids. Fibroids are benign growths that develop in the muscles of the uterus and can cause symptoms such as heavy bleeding, painful sex or an urge to urinate frequently. A myomectomy is a surgical procedure that can be completed hysteroscopically, laparoscopically or through traditional open surgery and can be accomplished by removing the fibroids or cutting their blood supply using a technique called myolysis. During myolysis, doctors cut the fibroids’ blood supply by heating, freezing or using radiofrequency energy.
